On May 15th, the government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) declared an outbreak of the Ebola virus across several regions.

Over 900 people have been infected, with over 160 deaths so far.

Conflict in the affected areas makes this outbreak highly concerning. Many people are displaced and don’t have proper access to healthcare. This also makes crucial contact tracing much more difficult.

What is ActionAid doing to support affected communities?

Preventing the spread of the disease is our key priority.

We have been running programmes in the affected Ituri province for many years. We’re working with local communities to mount a response, focusing on women and girls who are most at risk to the disease due to their caregiving responsibilities in the home.

Our supports include:

Providing cash transfers to women and girls in the most vulnerable households at risk of Ebola infection. This will support them and their families to meet urgent basic needs safely.
Distributing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) kits and protective equipment to communities and frontline workers.
Installing handwashing facilities and hand sanitizers in schools, public spaces, and displacement sites.
Helping communities access trusted information, reduce misinformation, and promote safe practices through awareness raising sessions.
Supporting women groups to develop local protection and risk reduction plans in response to the Ebola outbreak, strengthening community disaster preparedness and mitigation

Where your money goes

90% of your donation will go directly to our DRC Ebola Outbreak Appeal. 10% of your donation will be retained for ActionAid’s Emergency Action Fund. This fund will only be used to ensure that we are prepared and able to respond quickly and more effectively to future emergencies and crises. If the total amount raised for this appeal exceeds the funds needed for the response, ActionAid will transfer the remaining balance to the Emergency Action Fund.
